Ernst Logar: Reflecting Oil

IECS is pleased to welcome Austrian artist and researcher Ernst Logar to the University of Toronto for a presentation of his recent book, Reflecting Oil.

Reflections on crude oil in petroleum sciences and the humanities often occur without direct physical engagement with the substance itself. The interdisciplinary Reflecting Oil project brings together art-based research, practical experimentation, and holistic observation to examine crude oil within the context of contemporary petroculture. Focusing on sensory experience alongside aesthetic and symbolic interpretation, the project offers new perspectives on materiality, energy, and environmental knowledge.

During this event, Logar will discuss the Reflecting Oil project and present the newly published book, which brings together the research outcomes and artistic investigations developed throughout the initiative.

About the Speaker: Ernst Logar is an Austrian artist and cultural worker based in Vienna whose practice spans photography, film, video, sound, sculpture, and installation. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and site-specific projects, his work explores power relations, ecological questions, sociocultural dynamics, and contemporary political issues.

His projects have been presented internationally, including in the Austrian Parliament and at historically significant sites connected to Nazi crimes. Logar is currently a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
